Join us for a Blair Master Series faculty performance by violinist Stephen Miahky, accompanied by award-winning pianist Derek Hartman. Praised for his “sweet, luxurious” sound (Fanfare) and the “thoughtfulness and seriousness” (Nashville Scene) of his interpretations, Miahky holds the Joseph Joachim Chair at the Blair School of Music. He is associate professor of violin and first violin of the Blair String Quartet.

About Stephen Miahky
Stephen Miahky is an acclaimed violinist whose performances as a recitalist and chamber musician have taken him to leading concert halls and festivals across North America, Europe, and Asia. Recent appearances include New York City’s Symphony Space, Merkin Hall, and Bargemusic; NPR’s Performance Today; the Princeton Chamber Music Society; Vancouver’s Sonic Boom Festival; the American Academies in Rome and Berlin; and a special performance for the Dalai Lama.
A native of Akron, Ohio, Miahky earned a D.M.A. from Rutgers University, where he received the Bettenbender Award for outstanding artistic achievement, and B.M. and M.M. degrees from the University of Michigan, where he remains the only two-time recipient of the Earl V. Moore Award. He is associate professor of violin at Vanderbilt University, where he teaches violin and chamber music, directs the Adult Chamber Music Institute, and mentors students who have gone on to leading conservatories, festivals, and professional careers.
About Derek Hartman
Winner of the Seventeenth International Beethoven Piano Competition, American pianist Derek Hartman enjoys an international career as a performer and educator. In 2025, he became the first American-born pianist to win First Prize at the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna since its founding in 1958. Additional honors include top prizes at the Washington International Piano Competition, PianoArts North American Competition, and MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition. He has appeared as a soloist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and Clara Schumann Philharmonic and is a Bösendorfer Artist.
Hartman has served as lecturer of piano at Blair School of Music since 2024. A dedicated teacher and advocate for holistic musicianship, he previously taught at the New School for Music Study and Yale School of Music. He is currently a doctor of musical arts candidate at Yale University and holds degrees from Yale and Northwestern University.
