Join violist David Samuel for a Blair Master Series faculty recital in Turner Recital Hall. An assistant professor of viola, Samuel has built an international career as a performer, chamber musician, and educator, appearing at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and the Kennedy Center. A former member of the Alexander String Quartet, he brings a wealth of artistic experience and musical insight to this special recital.

About David Samuel:
David Samuel is a violist whose career as a performer, chamber musician, and educator has taken him around the world. A native Canadian, he is the violist of the Alexander String Quartet and assistant professor of viola at the Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music. Before settling in Nashville, he lived, performed, and taught in Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Toronto, New York, and San Francisco. As a founding member of the Afiara String Quartet, he earned top prizes at the ARD International Music Competition, the Banff International String Quartet Competition, and the Concert Artists Guild Competition, while helping develop innovative projects that connected chamber music with new media and interdisciplinary art.
Samuel has also served with Ensemble MidtVest in Denmark and as associate principal viola of the Auckland Philharmonia in New Zealand, alongside faculty appointments at institutions including the University of Stavanger, San Francisco State University, and the University of Auckland. He has performed with leading artists such as Pinchas Zukerman, Jörg Widmann, Michael Tree, and members of the Emerson and Juilliard String Quartets, appearing in venues including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Konzerthaus. A graduate of The Juilliard School and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Samuel has recorded extensively on labels including Naxos, Delos, and Dacapo, with repertoire ranging from classical masterworks to contemporary commissions and arrangements of music by The Beatles, Sting, and Led Zeppelin.
