World Premiere: The Ghosts of Chinatown
About
Ghosts of Chinatown is a new work for bass-baritone, viola, and piano that commemorates the victims of the 1871 massacre of Chinese immigrant workers in Los Angeles. Composed by Daixuan Ai with an original libretto by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li, the work was commissioned with support from the Peter and Lois Fyfe Faculty Fellowship.
The world premiere performance features Grammy Award–winning bass-baritone Dashon Burton, violist David Samuel, and pianist Sun-A Park. The evening will also include a visual installation of historical photographs, documents, and newspaper accounts that illuminate the events surrounding this tragic chapter in American history.
