This week’s Discovery Design Time layers up for Paper Mache Trees, a 25 Days of Discovery-themed session exploring papier-mache — a craft technique believed to date back to 200 BC China, later named for the French phrase meaning “chewed paper” after gaining popularity in Europe in the early 1700s.
Guests will shred and paste strips of green-toned paper, layering them around a cardboard tree form to build structure and texture. Along the way, they’ll experiment with proportion — discovering how paper strips that are too large create unwanted folds, while ones too small won’t hold the form together.
Guests will build new vocabulary like structure and applique, while exploring design principles and craft history through a festive, hands-on build.
Discovery Design Time is a weekly program held every Thursday at Discovery Center at Murfree Spring — each session features a new theme and activity, so guests can join again and again for a fresh hands-on art experience.
