Drummer Dave Potter leads a stellar quartet featuring saxophonist Greg Tardy in celebration of what would have been John Coltrane’s 100th birthday, honoring the extraordinary contributions, innovations, and lasting influence Coltrane brought to jazz and generations of musicians around the world.
Born September 23, 1926, in Hamlet, North Carolina, John Coltrane became one of the most influential and transformative musicians in the history of jazz. Emerging as a commanding tenor saxophone voice alongside Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, Coltrane spent his career relentlessly expanding the possibilities of harmony, improvisation, rhythm, and spiritual expression. Landmark recordings including Giant Steps, My Favorite Things, and A Love Supreme chart an extraordinary musical journey—from hard bop and intricate harmonic exploration to modal jazz and the searching, deeply spiritual music of his later years. Though Coltrane died in 1967 at only 40 years old, his influence has never diminished, and his music continues to inspire musicians and listeners across generations.
Following his graduation from Florida State University, drummer Dave Potter was selected from a national pool of applicants to join the Louis Armstrong Quintet at the University of New Orleans, though Hurricane Katrina soon interrupted his plans in Louisiana. Potter later returned to Florida State, earning his master’s degree while continuing to work closely with his mentor, renowned pianist Marcus Roberts. Now based in Atlanta, Potter maintains a busy career as a performer, educator, and bandleader, touring and recording with artists including the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet, Greg Tardy, Eric Reed, and Marcus Roberts, while also leading his own acclaimed project, Dave Potter & Retro Groove.
New Orleans native Gregory “Greg” Tardy is an acclaimed saxophonist and clarinetist whose powerful sound and adventurous approach have made him a sought-after voice in modern jazz. A former member of legendary drummer Elvin Jones’ band—creating a direct musical connection to John Coltrane’s celebrated classic quartet—Tardy has performed and recorded with an extraordinary range of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Dave Douglas, Betty Carter, Bill Frisell, Rashied Ali, John Patitucci, Steve Coleman, and many others. As a leader, he has released numerous recordings for labels including Impulse!, SteepleChase, and WJ3 Records, earning recognition for a style that balances deep respect for the jazz tradition with a highly individual and forward-looking voice.
